King of Swords Featured on TPP... SQUEE
Dec. 23rd, 2009 09:43 am*glomps mods at The Petulant Poetess
I woke up this morning to discover that the mods at The Petulant Poetess decided to ring out the year by choosing their favorite stories from the year to feature.
King of Swords is one of them.
I am, in a word, gobsmacked. This story began as part of a PP Challenge (which
ariadne1 dragged me into at the same time that she began writing In Spirit... which I consider KoS's sibling :)) back in April, 2008 and was interrupted many times for other writing (and life) obligations. It's had a small but enthusiastic readership (<3 readers), and seeing it featured means more to me than I could possibly express.
Glomps and thanks to
lady_karelia and the other admins (
kittylefish , I see you...I glomp you...) at TPP for choosing King of Swords out of the sea of wonderful stories that posted in 2009. I've never had a story featured there before--what a wonderful end-of-year gift!
I'm also thrilled to see several of my favorite stories alongside my own. This Time by
subvers and The Life Unlived by
sshg316 were both written for the 2008-09 SSHG Exchange and are marvelous stories. If you've not read them, run, don't walk! I've not yet read the other two that are featured but they are on the top of my reading list!
A word about King of Swords as a WIP. I know that many people don't read stories until they're completed (for understandable reasons!) and that this story's initial publish date is from long ago. However. I have posted six chapters in the last several months (two last week), and Chapter 12 will go up tonight or tomorrow. The story has hit its stride, and the arc is much clearer to me. I'm hoping to have it finished before it's time to start writing the next SSHG Exchange story. How's that for motivation?

Date: 2009-12-23 04:23 pm (UTC)While squeeing over my upcoming induction into SSHG exchange wibbling, I've been telling myself sternly that no matter what I do, I am NOT allowed to do anything as ambitious as what Machshefa did last year! Holy cripes, woman! (not sure whether to applaud, worship, or pass out)

Date: 2009-12-23 10:25 pm (UTC)I'm thrilled you're thinking about participating in the exchange! I did not ever intend to produce something as... ambitious (that's a nice word for it!) as Tree of Life. It took on a life of its own and I had no choice!
I'm grateful I got out of writing that fic alive :-p

Date: 2009-12-23 05:00 pm (UTC)Now that the House Cup madness is over, I can catch up on the most recent additions to Kings of Swords. I'm really looking forward to that! Also, I'm going to take the plunge and participate in the upcoming exchange. The quality of fic and art produced for the exchange is incredible. I hope what I create will be worthy of being called 'Exchange Fic.'

Date: 2009-12-23 10:26 pm (UTC)Oh, do catch up... and there will be a shiny new chapter up later tonight or tomorrow, so that makes three chapters for you.
The Exchange is wonderful to participate in and to read (and view)! I'm so happy you'll be participating :)

Date: 2009-12-23 09:35 pm (UTC)Well, chapter 12 is in the hands of the wonderful AnnieTalbot right now. I'm planning for it to go up tonight or tomorrow. Chapter 13 is speaking to me... My plan is for regular (weekly or biweekly depending on how it goes) updates. If this can be done before I have an exchange story to write, I'll be so happy.
So, if you don't read WIP's for fear of them being abandoned, I think you're safe here. I am in the groove. I am determined. The story is right --> there. And I swear, after my experience writing Tree of Life (in which the story sucked me in, threw me around, then dumped me on the corner to hitch a ride home) I do NOT want an interruption like that to this story arc or posting.
So... either way... I'd love it if you were reading. If you really, really want to wait, it'll be there waiting for you. If you want to read and wait for the regular updates, that would only make me all the more determined not to fall off the wagon. :)

Date: 2009-12-27 04:59 am (UTC)*iz evil but in a good way :)
I just reread from the beginning for continuity and a few details I'd lost. The first chapter or two are definitely written by a writer less sure of her voice. Just know that... it's interesting, actually.

Date: 2009-12-27 05:00 pm (UTC)With that in mind, I've been absorbing my NaNo glut with an eye toward its future, as some of the internal dynamics have changed (as these things do) from the initial outline. After the first, our normal schedule will re-assert itself, and I plan on writing the rest of the book. I'm looking forward to it, actually.

Date: 2009-12-27 07:32 pm (UTC)Chapter 13 is actually nearly ready to post. The time it takes for each chapter to take shape is getting shorter and shorter. I'm hoping it's a sign of a smoothing out of my writing process and confidence :). I'm sure they're related!
NaNo must be an amazing experience if even just to observe yourself in the process. I'll be interested to hear what you notice as you go back over what you produced.

Date: 2009-12-30 08:04 pm (UTC)Thank you! I just now saw your review on OWL. It's difficult material. Psychologically complex and not linear... so I'm really glad that it's compelling to read. I can see the shift in my writing over time, but it's a relief to hear that it doesn't read unevenly. WOOT!
Chapter 14 wants to be written, it's swirling around waiting for me to sit down to write it down. Since I am not paralyzed with anxiety with each chapter like I used to be, I think that helps with the better flow of writing (process).
There will be more soon! And I do have a sense of where it goes and how it gets there--I'm just a pretty organic writer so I have to be told by the story and characters... *bats eyelashes at them :)

Date: 2009-12-31 01:29 am (UTC)In all seriousness, though, one of the main things that draws me to it is the originality of your premise. It's nice to know that all the fanfic permutations are not yet written. :)
no subject
Date: 2009-12-31 02:57 am (UTC)I'm surprised to see that this premise hasn't been explored. I do wonder if it's been done in other pairings or gen... It might be that it's just not been done in the SSHG world yet. But it's very Jungian. Oh, which reminds me -- if you're interested in seeing how these themes play out with regard to Animagus and Patronus images, I encourage you to read Tree of Life. It's finished :)
