I think you're right. What you said here made me think about what it is I'm reaching for when I write. I know from my own history where that urge to want to be BIGGER and BETTER comes from and that eleventy years of therapy has tamed it quite a bit, but not completely. What's interesting to think about now is BIGGER and BETTER what?

When I see a story that gets a huge response (a story that I enjoy and lose myself in), I'll sometimes wonder what makes that story, amongst the thousands out there, stand out. I remember when I first started writing, trying to figure out how to get an idea or image that I got excited about onto the page and then wondering why sometimes the audience seemed to feel the same way as I did, and sometimes, not as much. Maybe that's what you're talking about when you reflect on the translation of ideas and images into words--that unstable medium of language.
