This and that
I saw DH with the girls last night, and it was good. Really, really good. No spoilers here, but I'll just say that the emotional tone and rhythm of this movie felt spot on to me, in stark contrast to HBP which was choppy and disconnected (and disconnecting). I started to tear up in the first scene with Hermione and felt choked up many times throughout. The scope of this story continues to boggle me.
I've been taking a rest post completion of "King of Swords" and it's been good. More fic reading, more tv watching (SHERLOCK FTW!), and just general hanging out. I'm trying to give myself space and perspective and hoping to find my land legs. There are some identity shifts happening, methinks, and it'll be interesting to see where it goes from here. *hugs to the flist for being so supportive when I get all whiny and wibbly...
Given the resumption of fic reading, I'm thinking of pulling out my
fangirl_tour and
crack_broom recs from the last year or two and wandering over to the Deathly Hallows Awards and making some nominations. :)
Finally, I'm worried about the number of flisters who have suffered from traumatic and overwhelming events lately. *hugs you all
I wanted to share a resource that I hope will help, or at least will be a step towards healing. Some of you have heard me talk about EMDR (Eye-Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing) which is a wonderful treatment for Trauma and Anxiety. It sounds like voodoo (I think), but there is a great deal of empirical data supporting its usefulness, so much so that the VA hospitals here in the US utilize it, and many, many therapists around the world use it in their practices but also after natural and other types of disasters (the EMDR Institute runs a Humanitarian Assistance Program).
The best part about it is that it works quickly. I've been using it for about seven years and continue to be impressed and amazed at how helpful it is. It's a real gift to have a tool like that in my therapeutic toolbox, let me tell you. I'd be happy to give an explanation of what it is and how it works if people are interested. The websites do provide some of that, but I'd be happy to add my personal experience as a therapist using it regularly.
Anyway, the way to find a therapist trained in EMDR (and you need someone trained, not someone who read an article once and is trying to replicate the process) is here or here.
Hugs and healing thoughts to everybody. I hope that this next year brings health, healing and peace.

I'm so glad you enjoyed DH! :)
I think that we go in cycles of identity - it certainly doesn't stop after middle school and high school, as much as we'd like to believe it! ;) Enjoy the discovery, you never know what may come out of it!
And yes, Sherlock, definitely ftw! I'd love to hear your thoughts sometime!

Do make some Deathly Hallows award nominations -- it's fun and easy, and I like these sorts of events; they're community-building, I think. (Like Crack Broom and Fangirl Tour, I see them as a chance to pay writers back for all the pleasure they give me.)
I've still got "King of Swords" on my holiday-reading list. Only three-and-half weeks until the semester is over, exams and all!

I agree with you about the DH awards. It's community building and a terrific high for the authors who are nominated. To know that someone thought of you or your story enough to pluck it out of the crowd is a real gift. It's one of the things I love best about doing recs (fangirl tour or crack broom or just regular waving it around so others read it, too).
You're in the home stretch, semester-wise! Woot! When you get to it, I hope you enjoy "King of Swords." I'm in the flinchy part of the relationship with it at the moment, so I'm hardly in a position to know how new readers will feel about it. :) Can't wait to hear your thoughts when the time comes. *bounces

I hope you never have the need. But if you should, it's worth finding someone.
